The SPD's inheritance tax reform would affect significantly more family businesses than previously known. This is revealed by a new analysis from The Foundation for Family Businesses and Politics, published by Handelsblatt (German business newspaper) on February 2, 2026. Instead of the previously estimated 44,000 companies, the Foundation's calculations show that 83,000 businesses with 5.2 million employees would be affected.
